Standard based grading is a recent phenomena in the field of education. This innovation got its start due to the need for a reassessment of how educators should grade students in a more accurate way. Standard based grading is a grading system based on a students specific learning goals or standards. Elementary school students today do not see the normal letter grades anymore, but they see numbers. According to the article, Rethinking Report Cards, "As the No Child Left Behind law pushes schools and educators across the country to the center their teaching on the content and learning standards, report cards are beginning to look different, too." There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of standard based grading.
